Symbolism of the Icon “The Hospitality of Abraham”

As the book of Genesis (18:1) informs us, while Abraham was sitting near the oak tree of Mamre, where he had pitched his tent, he was visited by three men he did not know.

The Patriarch welcomed them with cordiality and love, even though they were strangers to him. He then provided them with a rich banquet. During the conversation the mysterious visitors announced to Abraham that his wife Sarah would have a child within a year, which she did.

The Church Fathers saw in this biblical event a foreshadowing of the mystery of the Holy Trinity, which was fully revealed in the New Testament. For this reason, the hospitality of Abraham was immediately depicted in a related icon.

Since in the continuation of the biblical narrative two of the three men appear as angels, it was extended to depict all three of them at Abraham’s hospitable table in their angelic form. This depiction is, after all, a beautiful way of presenting the three men as heavenly visitors.
