Within the magnificent Basilica of the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem stands out the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary, the so-called Bethlehemite.

The holy icon of Virgin Mary of Bethlehem is the most important icon of the Basilica of the Nativity of Christ in Bethlehem and is placed in a prominent shrine on the right side of the south entrance of the Holy Cave of the Nativity.

The infinite affection, which overflows from the eyes of the icon of the Virgin Mary, and her serene gaze, sweeten and gladden the hearts of the faithful. Similarly, the clothing of the icon of the Virgin, covered with luxurious fabrics and precious stones, make a special impression.

There is no clear historical evidence for the origin of the icon. It is assumed that it comes from Russia and in particular the pious tradition connects it with the Russian Empress Catherine, who, after a miracle performed by the Virgin Mary, visited the Holy Land and Bethlehem and donated her Tsarist garments to be dressed as the “Lady of the World”.

According to tradition, she also gave her jewels to be placed on the holy icon, ordering from then on that the tsarinas should no longer wear rubies (diamonds in other words), but that this should be the exclusive prerogative of the “Queen of Angels”.

Undoubtedly, Panagia Bethlehemitissa holds a special place in the hearts of all Orthodox. Theotokos, the Lady of the Holy Land, is the loving mother who obeyed God’s command and brought our Savior and Redeemer, our Lord, into the world, and at the same time she is the mother of us all and an ambassador to her Son in our every appeal.

He is our guardian angel. In our difficult moments, we spontaneously turn to her person, image and grace, always invoking her as our “warm protector and helper”.
