Saint Philip was one of the twelve disciples of the Lord. He came from Bethsaida of Galilee, where Andrew and Peter came from. The Lord Himself called him to be His disciple, and then Philip brought Nathanael to the Lord.
It is worth mentioning, however, a dialogue ( Gospel of John, n’) that Philip had with the Lord, where he gives the Lord an occasion to reveal that he himself is like God the Father.
So Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us” (Lord, reveal to us, show us the Father, and it is enough for us).
And the Lord answered him, among other things, “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me?”(Do you not believe, Philip, that I am inseparable from the Father, so that I am and abide in the Father, and the Father is and abides in me? And I am so united that what I teach you is not of myself. But my Father who abides in me, He works the supernatural works).
Tradition has it that Philip preached the Gospel to the Parthians and died a martyr’s death in Hierapolis in Syria.
The venerable skeleton of the apostle for many years adorned the holy temple that had been built in Hierapolis in honour of the saint. And his holy cart was honoured by various emperors, such as Theodosius, Heraclius and others with their royal seals.
After the fall of the Kingdom of Cities by the Latins in 1204 AD, the venerable relic was transferred to Cyprus and for many years it was kept in the village of Arsos (Arsinoe, Paphos) in the holy temple built there in honour of the apostle.
Later a part of the relics was distributed to various places for blessing. The case with the sacred cart before 1788 AD was moved to the Holy Monastery of the Cross in Omodos for greater safety and is kept there until today.
