Agia Theophany is one of the most ancient feasts of our church which was established in the 2nd century AD and refers to the manifestation of the Holy Trinity at the baptism of Jesus Christ. The history of baptism is as follows: Following a divine command, John the Baptist left the hermit life and came to the Jordan River where he preached and baptized.
There Jesus appeared one day and asked to be baptized. John, although the Holy Spirit had informed him who it was that was asking him to be baptized, at first refused to baptize him, claiming that he himself needed to be baptized by Him.
But Jesus explained that this was God’s will and persuaded him to baptize him. And then before the astonished eyes of the spectators a unique and magnificent scene took place, when the Holy Spirit descended in the form of a dove and sat on the baptized Jesus, while at the same time the voice of God was heard from heaven saying: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (“This is my beloved Son, this is my chosen one”).
Since then, the baptism of Christians is not “in water”, like John’s baptism of “repentance”, but “in the Holy Spirit”. By being baptized, the Lord sanctified water, made it water of sanctification and reconciliation with God. Thus the Baptism of the Lord opened the door of the Sacrament of Baptism. By the cleansing grace of Holy Baptism the old sinful man is renewed and by keeping the divine commandments he becomes an heir to the kingdom of heaven.
In the centre of the picture the Jordan River is painted with a fast current and on both sides of it towering rocks. The waters seem as if they are not touching the body of Christ.
In the centre of the picture again, but higher up, there is the semicircle that symbolizes the heavens. Many times there is the hand of God the Father blessing. From the semicircle there are rays of light that start from the semicircle and go towards Christ.
Christ lies in the river naked, like Adam, and thus bestows upon humanity the glorious paradisiacal garment. Christ blesses the water with one or both hands. Beneath his feet are the dragons which he treads upon.
The dove, the Holy Spirit, is visible in the rays, and thus the whole Holy Trinity is present in the image.
At one end is John the Baptist in a reverent pose with one hand on Christ’s head and the other in a posture of supplication. Behind John is a pickaxe between the branches of a tree.
Opposite John are two or three angels in a posture of reverence, ready to receive the Lord, holding sails.
