Saint Barbara the Great Martyr was beheaded by her own father who, after her beheading, fell dead after being struck by lightning.
The Saint fled and escaped by taking refuge in the mountains. But she was arrested and taken to the Roman Eparch. The Prefect, admiring her beauty, did all he could to persuade her, but she was adamant.
So he subjected her to torture, more to save her from the wrath of her father who wanted to kill her. In the end the prefect decided to have her beheaded, and even her father himself was to carry out the sentence, since that was what he himself wanted.
According to her biographer, Simeon, “in her father’s hands, the father’s skin is scratched and she receives the end”. But at the moment he was finishing his crime, he fell dead, struck by lightning.
