On the first Friday after Easter, our Church celebrates the Zoodochos Pigi.

The feast is essentially dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, who, while being a creation of God, like all men, nevertheless conceived supernaturally and contributed by her obedience to His will to the incarnation of the Son of God. She gave birth to the God-Man Jesus Christ, the life and resurrection of humanity, the liberator of men from suffering.

The names that are celebrated every year on Easter Friday, that is, this year on May 7, are: Zoe, Zois, Zisis, Zissis, Zisimos, Zissoula, Zoitsa, Zozo, Pigi, Fountain, Krinio.

Under the name Zoodochos Figi of Balukli there is a holy Christian pilgrimage site with a holy shrine, built in the 5th century AD and located in the Eptapyrgios area of Constantinople, outside the western gate of Silyvria, where the so-called “palaces of the springs” used to be. It takes its name from the Turkish name Balık, meaning fish, and includes the monastery, the church and the sanctuary.

In the monastery today there is a brotherhood of nuns. The pilgrims devoutly embrace the icon of the Virgin Mary and receive a blessing from the Holy Spirit of the Monastery.

The Mother of Christ as the Fountain of Life is an adjective of the Virgin Mary. It began to be used with the revelation of a holy spring in Balukli, Constantinople, by the Virgin Mary to a soldier named Leo Marcellus, who later became the Byzantine Emperor Leo I (457-474).

Leo built the historic church of the Zoodochos Pigi of Balouklis at that spot, where numerous miraculous cures have been performed over the centuries, with her intercession, making it one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Greek Orthodoxy. Thus, the term “Zoodochos Pigi” became an epithet of the Holy Theotokos and was represented in the art of iconography.
