The women who attended the burial of the Lord on Friday afternoon, namely Mary Magdalene and the others, when they returned from Calvary to the city, prepared spices and perfumes to anoint the body of Jesus; and the next day they abstained from all activity because of the Sabbath holiday.
But at the profound service of Sunday, which is called by the Evangelists “the first Sabbath” and “a Sabbath day”, that is, the first day of the week, after almost thirty-six hours from the death of the life-giving Redeemer, they come with funereal perfumes to the tomb.
And while they were thinking of the difficulty of rolling the stone out of the entrance of the tomb, there is a terrible earthquake; and an angel with a lightning face and a snow-lighted robe, having uncovered the stone and sat on it, made the guards afraid and put them to flight.
The women, meanwhile, after entering the tomb and not finding the body of Jesus, see two white-robed angels in male form, who, having revealed to them the resurrection of the Savior, send them to announce the joyful news to the disciples.
In a short time Peter and John arrive at the tomb, having learned what was done by Mary Magdalene, as has already been said, but on entering they find only the shrouds. Therefore they all go up into the city with joy, preachers of the resurrection of Christ, whom they actually saw alive five times on this feast day.
Celebrating this joyful Resurrection today, we embrace among ourselves the embrace in Christ, showing in this way the breaking of the first enmity between us and God and God’s reconciliation with us once again, a reconciliation made manifest by the passion of the Saviour.
And the feast is called the Passover, having thus the same name as the Passover of the Jews, which in their language means passage; for the Passion and Resurrection Jesus brought us out of the curse of Adam and the bondage of the devil into freedom and bliss. And this day of the week, on which the resurrection of Christ took place, which is the first of the other days, because, being consecrated to the honour of the Lord, was called from His name Sunday, and to it was transferred by the Apostles the holiday and rest of the Sabbath of the old law.
