Anthony the Great is a Saint of the Orthodox Church and the first ascetic of Christianity, who founded healthy monasticism. He lived during the reigns of the emperors Diocletian and Maximianus until the time of Constantine the Great and his children. He lived most of his life as an ascetic in the desert and died on January 17, 356, when his memory is commemorated.
Antony the Great was born in 251 AD in Upper Egypt to wealthy and virtuous parents, whom he lost at a young age. But he concentrated his attention on the secret theory of the desert monks and the care of his younger sister.
He quickly decided to leave the world and set off for the desert, after settling his younger sister and distributing his father’s large fortune to the poor of his region.
In the desert he trained his soul and tamed his passions, reaching the highest limits of exercise so that the soul of the saint could leave his body while he was still alive. He became the model of ascetics. Many of them came to the desert to listen to him and consult him.
He surrendered his blessed soul to the mercenary God at the age of 105.
Although, as Athanasius the Great says, one of the last wishes of Saint Anthony was to keep the place of his burial secret, the monks who lived near him said that they possessed his holy relic, which under Justinian (561 AD) was deposited in the Church of Saint John the Baptist in Alexandria and from there, later, in 635 AD, it was transferred to Constantinople.
