Saint Catherine came from a noble family of Alexandria, “daughter of a king named Constus”, and was martyred at the beginning of the 4th century AD (304 AD).She was brilliant and learned. Already at the age of eighteen she had a knowledge of Greek, Roman and Latin literature and philosophy, i.e. she knew the works of Homer, the Latin poet Virgil, and Asclepius, Hippocrates and Galen of the physicians, Aristotle and Plato, Philistion and Eusebius of the philosophers, Jannis and Imbrus of the great magicians, Dionysius and Sivyllis and others. But she was also well trained in the doctrines of the Christian faith.
When persecution against Christians was being carried out under Maxentius (son of Maximianus), Catherine was not afraid, but boldly spread the word that Jesus Christ is the only True God. For this reason she was arrested by the prefect of the region, who tried to persuade her to deny her faith by means of discussions. When the prefect saw the superiority of Catherine’s words, he convened a public debate with the most worthy orators of Alexandria, but Catherine excommunicated them. Not only that, but some of Catherine’s interlocutors were convinced of her reasons and converted to the Christian Faith.
Faced with this outcome, the prefect ordered her to be tortured severely in the hope that the saint would bend and deny Christ. But Catherine remained steadfast in her faith. Eventually she was beheaded by order of the prefect.
