Feast of 16 November
The glorious and Calvinist martyr of Christ, Iphigenia, came from Tokati of Pontus, born in 53 AD to pagan parents who came to know the true faith through the Apostle Andrew the First-Catholic and were baptized by him in the family.
During the reign of the cruel persecutor of Christians and idolater Nero, Iphigenia’s parents were arrested and imprisoned.
After this, the Governor of Tokatis, sends soldiers, who arrest the young and beautiful daughter and heiress of Christ of Nazareth, Iphigenia, and bring her before him for questioning.
Despite her young age, only 15 years old, Iphigenia vigorously confesses before the cruel idolater and Governor Mark her faith in Christ and with great power she thunders that she is a fervent seeker of the Bridegroom Christ and that for His Holy Name she is ready to give even her life.
As much as he tried with flattering speeches and promises to persuade Iphigenia to deny Christ, he did not succeed; so, seeing her strong character, he gives her soldiers harsh orders to torture her.
The soldiers take thin sharp irons and place them on the nails of the martyr, from which the blood flows like a river; then, after stripping her naked, they cut her breasts and body with knives, and then four soldiers hold her by her legs and arms and dislocate her limbs. The saint from the terrible pains lost consciousness and fainted.
The Commander regrets what he has done but is obliged to put her to death, in execution of the royal decree.
He repents for what he has done to her martyred body and approaches it with respect; he asks for forgiveness; the saint, hearing his words, opens her eyes for a moment and whispers: “Lord Jesus Christ have mercy on thy servant,” and again adds: “I believe in the resurrection from the dead,” and with these words she delivers her holy and thirsty soul into the hands of the Bridegroom Christ on the 16th of November of the salvific year A.D. 68, at the age of 15 years.
The Governor brings from exile her parents to whom he announces what has taken place; and her parents, with pride and enthusiasm, learn of their daughter and bless God.
They then proceed to the place where the urn with her perfumed and martyred body was placed and embrace it, rejoicing, praying and blessing Christ the Saviour.
The Commander, living in these holy and moving moments, confesses his faith in Christ with a powerful cry and works with the saint’s parents for the spread of the Faith in the regions of Pontus.
