Feast of 4 June
Saint Martha, the elder sister of Saint Lazarus, was a hostess from Bethany who with great care hosted the Lord and His disciples when they visited her city.
Our Christ praised her for the daily concerns that occupied her (Luke 1:41-42). She was spiritually rehabilitated shortly afterwards, and developed with the Lord a very beautiful dialogue on life and death shortly before the resurrection of her brother, who had died four days before, in which, through His words, ” I am the resurrection and the life. He that believeth in me, let him not die, but live. ∙ “And whosoever lives and believes in me shall not perish forever” (Jn.I, 20-27) revealed to her His divine identity, His sovereignty over life and death, and established her faith in the resurrection and eternal life.
After the stoning of Saint Stephen the First Martyr and Archdeacon, Saint Martha was arrested with other Christians and exiled by ship, which ran aground in Provence, a city in southern France. There, as in the town of Avignon, the Saint evangelized Christianity. She did the same in Tarascon after she had first anointed a dragon that was ravaging the city.
Full of faith in the risen Christ and full of spiritual experiences, shortly afterwards she created a communal parthenon which she led. She died in peace in the same city where she is still honoured as a patroness to this day. Her tomb still survives. Of her myrrh-bearing relics, her venerable cart and her right hand are litany during the feasts of the temple.
