Saint Simeon the Theodore is the patron saint of embryos and pregnant women. He was the Righteous One who welcomed the Infant Jesus into the Temple at the Saranctus – the Last Supper.
Simeon lived in Jerusalem. He was righteous, pious and enlightened by the Holy Spirit, who had revealed to him that he would not die before he saw Christ. This glad tidings encouraged him to his old age.
Finally, exactly forty days after Jesus’ birth, the Spirit informed him that he had to go to the Sanctuary. So he prepared himself with youthful vigor, went there and stood at the door, full of joy and exultation. In the midst of this expectation, Joseph and the Virgin, who was holding Jesus, seemed to come.
Simeon, informed by the Spirit that this infant is the Christ, runs and takes Jesus in his arms.
He held him reverently and, having observed the infant well and accepted all the holiness of his divine form, he raised his eyes up and said, thanking God: “Thou dost now redeem thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace: for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared in the sight of all the people, a light for the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy lau Israel.”
Now therefore, take my soul, O Lord, according to your word, in peace, for my eyes have seen him who will bring the salvation which you have prepared for all peoples, and will be a light to them, who will reveal the true God and glorify your people Israel.
