Saint George (280 – 23 April 303) seems to have been born in Armenia of the Greek senator Gerontius, a military man by profession and Polychronia.
Due to the premature death of his father, they were transferred to Lydda, Palestine. At a young age he joined the Roman army and Diocletian made him a Duke and later a Count because of his bravery. But St. George was now a Christian and when Diocletian launched a persecution against the Christians, George courageously admitted his faith.
Diocletian, although he admired him, was surprised and then tried to convert him. This proved impossible and he then subjected him to horrible torture. He was beheaded in prayer on April 23, when we celebrate his feast day.
The Christians took his remains and those of his mother, who was also martyred the next day, and buried them in Lydda in Palestine.Later, the crusaders carried his remains to the West. The faith of St George became the reason for many military men to become Christians, even Diocletian’s wife.
Called by the Orthodox Church the Great Martyr and Trophy Bearer, he is one of the most popular saints in the entire Christian world. His memory is commemorated on April 23, or for Churches that go by the Julian calendar, where if the day coincides before the Resurrection, it is moved to the Monday of the Day of Atonement.
