Celebration 8 May
John the Evangelist, the beloved disciple of the Lord, “the one who was the supposer of Jesus’ breast”, is the one who wrote the Gospel of John, but also the three Catholic Epistles that bear his name.
The memory of the Apostle John is celebrated on September 26. Today’s feast is connected with the emergence of miraculous dust from the tomb of the Evangelist, through the miraculous action of the Holy Spirit, which the locals called “earthly mother”.
The Evangelist John, having foreseen, by divine illumination, that he was to pass from this life to the eternal and unending life, took his disciples and went out of Ephesus. There at one place he indicated that a tomb should be opened. As soon as this was done, he entered it alive and slept in peace. This tomb henceforth became a fountain of spices.
The Synaxis of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist was held in his illustrious temple, which was located in the place called Ebedmon, in today’s Makrochori of Constantinople. We know about this temple in Ebedmon, which existed at the end of the 4th century AD, from Socrates Scholasticus. In the 9th century AD, the church of the Theologian was overwhelmed, perhaps due to earthquakes or weather conditions, so the emperor Basil of Macedon rebuilt it from the ground up.
Finally, it is worth mentioning the phrase that the Apostle John constantly told his disciples: “Teknia, love one another” (John 34), which means, my children, love one another. And when his disciples asked him why he kept telling them the same phrase, he replied, “Because it is the Lord’s commandment, and when this alone is done, it is sufficient.”
