Saint Ierotheos was a Platonic philosopher and one of the nine members of the Senate Council of the Supreme Court. After receiving and being taught the faith of Christ by the Apostle Paul, he was ordained the first bishop of Athens. His disciple was St. Dionysius the Areopagite (see 3 October), who in his writings weaves praise for his teacher.
He died in peace in old age, after many years of pastoral and writing activity. His honorable coffin is kept in the monastery of the same name in Megara, Attica. His remains are also preserved in Mount Athos (St. Paul’s Chapel) and in the chapel of St. Andrew (Archdiocese of Athens).
M. Galanos in his Synaxis states that it is impossible that Jerome was the first to be taught the Christian faith by the Apostle Paul, because Acts explicitly affirms that Dionysius was the first to believe according to the teaching of the Apostle Paul. But even if he was still an Areopagite, or more importantly, the first bishop of the church of Athens, was it possible to omit such a great figure to be included simply in the general expression “that others also believed”? For this reason, then, it is more reasonable – continues M. Galanos – to accept that it is probable that Jerome believed after Dionysius and was taught by him, after Paul had left Athens. But whatever the case may be, it is certain that Jerome was a man of great social education, made first bishop of Athens, and worked for his flock with faith and great zeal. In fact, according to some tradition, Jerome was present at the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Jerusalem (15 August).
