Celebration 25 December
On 25 December our Holy Church celebrates the great and ineffable event of the birth of the Son and Word of God in the flesh by the Most Holy Virgin Mary.
After the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary by the archangel Gabriel, and as the nine months since the supernatural conception of Christ in her virgin womb drew to a close, Caesar Augustus ordered a census of the population of the Roman state.
Then Joseph and the Virgin Mary set out for Bethlehem to be enrolled there. So they set out from Nazareth and after a tedious journey they arrived in Bethlehem, where, because a crowd had gathered, they were unable to find lodging, except in a poor cave.
There the Virgin Mary gave birth to the Lord Jesus Christ and conceived as an infant the Creator of the world. Then she placed Him on the manger of the horses, because “He was destined to deliver us from sin”, as St. Nicodemus the Athonite writes.
Since then, all faithful Christians have joyfully sung the hymn of the angels that night: “Glory in the highest, peace on earth, and goodwill toward men” (see Gospel of Luke 2:1-20). Glory be to God, who is in the highest parts of heaven, and on the whole earth, which is troubled by sin, may divine peace reign, for God has shown His love to men by the incarnation of His Son.
We should note here that the celebration of Christmas was first established on December 25th, 397 AD during the patriarchate of St. John Chrysostom. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, Juvenal of Jerusalem, separated the two feasts of Lights and Christmas, which used to be celebrated on the same day, i.e. January 6.
