On Friday, Jesus is sent as a prisoner by Caiaphas to Pontius Pilate, then ruler of Judea. He, having interrogated Him in many ways, and having twice confessed that Jesus was innocent, then, to please the Jews, condemns Him to death; and having scourged Him as a runaway slave the Master of all,

He handed him over to be crucified. From then on, Jesus, after being handed over to the soldiers, is stripped naked, wears a red chlamys, is crowned with a crown of thorns, holds a reed as a scepter, is mockingly bowed down, spat upon and beaten on the face and head.

Then, putting on his clothes again and carrying the Cross, he goes to Golgotha, the place of condemnation, and there, around the third hour of the day, he is crucified between two thieves, blasphemed by those who had gone to Golgotha with him, initiated by the chief priests, watered by the soldiers with vinegar mixed with gall.

At about the ninth hour, after first uttering a great voice, he says: “It is finished,” he breathes out “the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world,” at which time, according to the law, the Passover lamb was slain, which was established as a custom among the Jews, prefiguring Christ crucified, 1043 years ago.

This despotic death and the lifeless creation, mourning, trembles and is corrupted by fear, but the Creator of creation even when He is dead, reckons His inviolate side and flows from it blood and water.

Finally, at sunset, Joseph comes from Arimathea, and Nicodemus with him, and the two secret disciples of Jesus, take down from the Cross the holy body of the teacher, perfume it, wrap it in a clean sheet, and after burying it in a new tomb, roll a large stone into its mouth.

It is these terrible and saving sufferings of our Lord Jesus Christ that we are commemorating today and in remembrance of them we have received the fast of Friday by apostolic command.
