An Icon of Deisis (also spelled “Deesis”) is a type of religious iconography that depicts Christ enthroned in heaven and surrounded by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, who are depicted as intercessors or supplicants. The word “Deisis” comes from the Greek word for “prayer” or “supplication.” The Icon of Deisis is usually placed in the central part of the iconostasis, which is the screen that separates the sanctuary from the nave in an Eastern Orthodox Church, or in the apse of a Byzantine Catholic Church. This icon is also called “The Deisis” or “The Deesis” and it is one of the most common depictions of Christ in Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The Deisis icon depicts Christ enthroned in heaven and surrounded by the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist, who are depicted as intercessors or supplicants, asking Christ to have mercy on the people.
