It is celebrated on 24 December.
Saint Eugenia the Hosiarthe Martyr lived in the second half of the 3rd century AD. She came from Rome and her parents’ names were Philip and Claudia. She also had two other siblings, Avita and Sergius.
Her father was appointed prefect in Alexandria and went there with his whole family. There Eugenia studied to the best of her ability and learned Greek and Roman literature with excellence. When she finished her studies, seeking for more knowledge, she got hold of the letters of the Apostle Paul from a Christian daughter. When she read them, she was very impressed. There were no theories and philosophical doctrines in there. Their lines inspired life and hope.
At that time, her parents wanted to give her as a wife to a Roman official, Aquilina. Then Eugenia, refusing to accept this proposal of her parents, one night dressed up in male attire and left for another city. There she was indoctrinated, baptized a Christian, and at the same time received the monastic habit.
After years, she returned home and the recognition by her parents was met with tears and unexpressed joy. It was not long before everyone in Eugenia’s home accepted Christianity. Out of hatred then the pagans mortally wounded her father. And when Eugenia returned to Rome, because she would not sacrifice to idols, they beheaded her, thus gloriously ending “the good fight of faith” (1 Timothy 12), along with her earthly life.
