Saint Matrona the Chiopolitida, the miracle worker
Osia Matrona was originally named Maria and was born in the village of Volissos in Chios to pious and wealthy parents, Leontas and Anna. Six other sisters of Maria, her eldest, got married one after another, sought-after brides for their beauty, upbringing and good dowry. The youngest devoted herself to the study of the uncles and was warmly involved in charitable duties. So he wanted to follow another path. Her regular contact with the nuns of the nunneries of the island, made Maria crave the pure solitary life. But the love for her parents kept her in her paternal home. But when they died, Maria experienced a solitary life with a pious widow, who was practicing with her two daughters. After this solitary experience, he decided to join the solitary classes.
She was ordained a nun and renamed Matron. Her conduct in the small fraternity was excellent. Her mood is always good, Philadelphia, humble and cordial. In fact, from the proceeds of the sale of her property, a beautiful temple was built in the monastery. After some time, the woman near whom Matrona trained in solitary life died. Then all the nuns together, elected Matrona – against her will – abbot. Under her direction the fraternity lived with much restraint, obedience and piety. In 1462 the Matron died, after living a truly holy life. Other sources estimate the time of the Saint’s sleep about 100 years before 1462, because her first biography was written by the Metropolitan of Rhodes Nilos (1357).
The Holy Cross is located in the Monastery of Zografou on Mount Athos. The right side of Agia is located in the Monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos. Fragments of the Holy Relic of the Saint are found in the homonymous Monastery of Hydra and in the Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Litochoro.
