High Priestly Mitre. It has its beginning in the Old Testament. It symbolizes the crown of thorns, but also the royal office of the Lord, since the High Priest is a living image of Christ in His Church. Its use expanded after the 16th century. <\/p>\n

Its design is based on the crown of the Emperors of the Byzantine Empire and its use began after the fall of Constantinople, as a symbol of the continuity of political organization from the ecclesiastical one. It was effectively established after the 16th century. <\/p>\n

Its original symbolism was the crown of thorns, which Christ wore before the Crucifixion. But it also symbolizes the royal office of the Lord, in the sense that the high priest who wears it is the living image of Christ in the Church. <\/p>\n
