It is worn by the High Priest and each of the officiating elders. It depicts the linen cloth with which the Lord washed the feet of His disciples.  <\/p>\n<p>The epigonatium is a rhombus-shaped amphora which hangs next to the right knee (on the knee) of the priest.<\/p>\n<p>The vestment is not allowed to a deacon or a simple elder, but to those who hold an ecclesiastical office after the rank of protopresbyter, i.e. archimandrite, bishop and patriarch.<\/p>\n<p>The original use of the kneeler was as a towel and symbolized the towel or apron (lentios) used by the Lord at the Last Supper.<\/p>\n<p>Also, because of its resemblance to a shield, it symbolizes the spiritual armament that the Priest of God must have to protect the flock entrusted to him by the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>During his ritual infusion the priest recites <i>secretly&#8217;<\/i> written by David in Psalms (44,45) to the Messiah &#8220;<i>Cast thy sword upon thy thigh, O Mighty One, for thy beauty and thy beauty and thy brow, and shine, and go forth and reign in truth, and in righteousness, and in justice, and let thy right hand lead thee wonderfully. Forever and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen  <\/i>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>It also symbolizes the spiritual sword, \u201cfor you always need the arrows of the sword, the scorched swords of the priest&#8230; and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God\u201d (Eph. f, 16). According to Saint Simeon of Thessaloniki, it also symbolizes the victory over death and the Resurrection of the Lord.
