Helen Dragasi-Palaeologos or Agia Patmos was the daughter of the Serbian despot Konstantinos Dragas Dejanovic (Greek: Konstantinos Dragasis), wife of the Byzantine emperor Manuel II Palaeologos and mother of the last two Byzantine emperors, John VIII and Constantine XI. She served as regent after the death of her son John VIII in 1448 until 1449. <\/p>\n

She is honoured as a saint by the Orthodox Church, with the monastic name Patmos.<\/p>\n

As a woman and empress, she was distinguished for her prudence and justice.<\/p>\n

Her husband Manuel II shortly before he died became a monk in 1425 with the name Matthew. After his death she became a nun in the Monastery of Kyra Martha in Constantinople, taking the name of Patmos. She was a nun like all the others and, even though she was an empress, she did all the ministries in the monastery. Yet many people consulted her and especially her sons. <\/p>\n

He died on 13 (or 23) March 1450, three years before Constantinople, the capital of the Empire, fell into the hands of the Ottoman Turks after a long siege. At the Fall of Constantinople, her son Constantine XI Palaiologos died in battle. <\/p>\n
