The epigonate is a rhomboidal fabric dependent on the belt with various representations. It is worn by the High Priest and each of the officiating elders. It depicts the linen cloth with which the Lord washed the feet of His disciples.
The epigonatium is a rhombus-shaped amphora which hangs next to the right knee (on the knee) of the priest.
The vestment is not allowed to a deacon or a simple elder, but to those who hold an ecclesiastical office after the rank of protopresbyter, i.e. archimandrite, bishop and patriarch.
The original use of the kneeler was as a towel and symbolized the towel or apron (lentios) used by the Lord at the Last Supper.

It also symbolizes the spiritual sword, “for you always need the arrows of the sword, the scorched swords of the priest… and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph. f, 16). According to Saint Simeon of Thessaloniki, it also symbolizes the victory over death and the Resurrection of the Lord. That is why the ministers, dressed up, say: “Thou shalt cast thy sword upon thy thigh, Dynasty…”
