Celebration 20 October
Saint Artemius was a distinguished Byzantine politician and a devout Christian. Constantine the Great, appreciating his moral and political gifts, gave him the office of patrician and appointed him Duke and Augustan of Alexandria.
In 357 AD he goes to Patras, by order of Emperor Constantine, son of Constantine the Great, to receive the holy relics of Saint Andrew and to re-cover them in the newly built Church of the Holy Apostles in Constantinople (3 March 357 AD).
During his stay in Patras and under his supervision he constructed an aqueduct. He was stationed in the area of the Monastery Nursing Home and helped a number of distressed people, especially the elderly, which justifies the name Nursing Home.
When, in 363 AD, Artemius heard that Julian the Betrayer was torturing Christians in Antioch, the words of the psalmist David to God came to his lips: “O Lord, in thy sovereign spirit uphold me” (Psalm N (50), v. Lord, uphold me with steadfast thoughts and a strong will, which will rule in me and direct me to defend the good with courage.
Indeed, Artemius, with the power God gave him, immediately went to Antioch and boldly and directly confronted Julian about his transgressions against the Christians. Julian, not expecting such an attitude from an official, arrested him and flogged him mercilessly. He then broke his bones with stones, and finally beheaded him. Artemius’ holy relic was received by a deaconess, Ariste, who took it to Constantinople, to the temple of the Prophet Prodromos.
The icon of Saint Artemius is an excellent choice to add spiritual beauty and sanctity to your space. It is ideal for Holy Temples or as a gift to loved ones.
