We do not know much about the life of Saint Fanourios. What we do know, we know from his icon that was miraculously discovered in the city of Rhodes on 27 August in the second half of the 14th Century. The icon depicts Saint Fanourios holding a cross with a candle, surrounded by twelve scenes of his martyrdom. Based on his clothes we can say that he was a Roman soldier.
In the images of his martyrdom, Phanurius is shown before his judges with a meek and haughty look as he is subjected to terrible torture such as being whipped, beaten, having his flesh burned with torches, having his bones crushed with torture machines and being thrown into the arena with wild beasts. Saint Fanourios seems to have endured his torture and even emerged untouched from it. Even the wild beasts seem to have been tamed by his serenity and meekness and, of course, by the protection he enjoyed from God. In the end, Phanurius was put to death in a great furnace.
Saint Fanourios helps in finding lost things and persons and is therefore considered to protect the missing and is very much associated with spiritual quests.
