The Offertory is the bread that we offer in the Temple for the celebration of the Eucharist. Together with the wine, as the Holy Gifts (bread and wine), before they are transferred with the Great Entrance to the Holy Altar, they are placed in the Prothesis (pro + tithimi = protheto), where they will be prepared for the Divine Liturgy by the ceremony of the Preparation of the Offertory. At the Scouting, parts of the Offertory will be ceremonially placed in the Discalogue and some wine in the Holy Chalice.
The round design of the Prosphorus symbolizes the womb of the Virgin Mary, from which her only begotten Son came (was born). On the Prosphorus there is a relief design, formed by a seal.
From the centre of the Prosphorus comes the Lamb, i.e. the central square of the design with the letters: IS CHS NI KA (Jesus Christ wins). These letters must be distinct and clearly visible. It is called Lamb (lamb) because the prophet Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah as a harmless lamb would be led to the sacrifice.
The plan of the Prosphorus also contains the portion of the Virgin Mary with the letters M and T, i.e. Mother of God. The triangular portion of the Virgin Mary is placed to the right of the Lamb on the Discalogue with the words, “In honor and memory of the most blessed, glorious Virgin Mary, our Lady, and ever-virgin Mary, to whom, O Lord, I bind this Sacrifice on your super-virgin Altar. (He continues with the 10th verse of the 44th psalm) The Queen is present at your right hand, clothed in robes of radiance, adorned with a robe.
We offer this portion in honor and memory of the most blessed and glorious Lady of our Lady and ever-virgin Mary, through whose intercession, O Lord, accept this Sacrifice on your most high altar. Honourably stood the Queen at your right hand, clothed in robes of gold, adorned). Our Lady in the Kingdom of God has the primacy of honour.
From the nine triangles on the right side of the offering, the portions of the angels and all the saints are extracted and placed to the left of the Lamb. The saints who are commemorated are the Prophets, Apostles, Hierarchs, Martyrs, Saints, Saints, Anargians, Theopatriarchs along with the saint of the day and lastly the Father of the Church who wrote the Divine Liturgy being celebrated. Also, according to Cavassila, the bloodless sacrifice is offered as thanksgiving to God, who gave us the saints. They are the models of all Christians, they guide them and intercede for them with their prayers.
From other parts of the Offertory, the portions for the living and the deceased, who belong to the Orthodox Church, are extracted. These are placed in front of the Lamb, and when, before the Holy Communion, during the contraction (union) of Body and Blood, the Minister throws them into the Grail, he says at the same time the following remarkable words. Amen.” (That is: Blot out completely, O Lord, the sins of those who are here remembered as Thy servants with Thy Holy Blood; with the intercessions of Theotokos and of all Thy saints. Amen). At the beginning of the Processional, the Celebrant raises (lifts up) the Prosphora up to the forehead and by this gesture symbolizes the elevation of Christ to the Cross, where He shed His honest Blood for the salvation of men.
