“….And to the holy spirit, which is the Lord and life-giving, proceeding from the Father, and bowed down and glorified with the father and sons, they spake it by the prophets….”
On the Monday after Pentecost, our Church celebrates the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Holy Trinity, who proceeds from the Father. It is identical with the persons of the Father and the Son and according to the Symbol of…
Great are the gifts that the benevolent God has given us today and they surpass human reasoning. Therefore, let us all rejoice together and, shaking with joy, let us praise our Lord. For this day is for us a feast and a festival; that is, just as the seasons and the movements of the sun succeed one another, so too in the Church one feast succeeds another, and in this way we pass from one to another. Not long ago we celebrated the cross, the Passion and the Resurrection, and after them the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ into heaven. Today we have reached the pinnacle of good things, in this crown of feasts, we are now in the realization of the Lord’s promises. “For if I go away,” he says, “I will send you another Comforter, and I will not leave you orphans. (John 16:6) Do you see His paternal concern? Do you see His unspoken charity? A few days ago He ascended into heaven, He sat on the royal throne at the right hand of the Father, and today He sends us as a gift the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and in this way He grants us infinite heavenly goods. For, tell me, which of the goods which contribute to our salvation is not given to us by the Holy Spirit?
By His grace we are delivered from the bondage of the devil, called into the freedom of Christ, led into heavenly adoption, born again from the beginning, and unburdened of the heavy and burdensome burden of our sins. By the grace of the Holy Spirit we see that there are so many priests and we have battalions of teachers of the Church. From this source have gone forth riches of prophecy and gifts of healing, and all the other things that usually adorn the Church of God come from the Holy Spirit. And Paul cries out and says: “For all these gifts the one and only Spirit works, distributing them as He wills to each one individually” (1 Cor. 12:11).
“As he wants,” he says, not as ordered. “He deals,” and he doesn’t deal. He has power, and he does not rule. For Paul says that the Holy Spirit has the same authority that the Father has. And just as he said of the Father “God is the one who acts everywhere and always” (1 Cor. 12:6), so he says of the Holy Spirit “for all these gifts the one and only Spirit acts, distributing them as He wills to each one individually.” Did you see his perfect power? For as many persons as have the same nature and substance are evidently of the same power, and as many as have the same value, in them there is one power and authority.
Thanks to the power of the Holy Spirit we were freed from sins, by which we washed our souls from every impurity. By the gift of the Holy Spirit, while we were men, we became angels, those of course who wanted His grace to help us, without changing our nature, but, and this is the most admirable thing, we retained our human nature and with it we displayed angelic behavior. So great, then, is the power of the Holy Spirit! And just as real fire, when it receives soft clay, makes it hard tile, so the fire of the Holy Spirit, when it receives a wise soul, even if it finds it softer than clay, makes it stronger than iron. And it suddenly makes him purer than the sun who was hitherto polluted by the impurity of sins.[…]
