“Go to Macedonia and help us” (Acts 16:9) is the plea of the Macedonian that the Apostle Paul sees in vision while in Troas. He sees this voice as the voice of God and without delay decides to penetrate the choicest part of Europe, Macedonia. He takes with him his chosen companions, Timothy, Silas and Luke.
They landed in Neapolis, today’s Kavala, and from there they departed for Philippi. Outside the city of Philippi and near the banks of the Zygaktos River is the place of prayer of the Jews. To the women gathered there, the Apostle Paul preaches, for the first time in Europe, the word of God.
The God-fearing women listen attentively and reverently to the words of the unknown Jew. But the one who is most excited of all is Lydia, the converted purple-haired woman from Thyatira. Within her there is an earthquake. Lydia’s heart has always been restless. She could not worship gods and goddesses who raged among themselves. So she was led to the prayer garden of the Jews. She knew the law of Israel and ignited in her or a thirst for seeking the Messiah. And now she hears for the first time the Apostle Paul speak of the Redeemer of the world. Lydia accepts the new teaching without any objection. She believes in Christ and declares unequivocally that she too wants to become a Christian. And the Apostle Paul completes his work. In the gurgling waters of the river Zygaktos he baptizes Lydia. The first Christian woman of Macedonia is naturalized in the kingdom of heaven. Now she is the first member of the first Church of Greece. Her heart overflows with feelings of gratitude to those who opened the eyes of her soul and ask to welcome them into her home. “And a woman named Lydia, a purple-headed woman of the city of Thyatira, who reverenced God, heard that the Lord had opened her heart to watch over those who were being baptized by Paul, and when her house was baptized, she cried out, saying, ‘If ye have found me faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide with me;’ and she rebuked us.” (Acts 16:14-15).
