Saint Aristides was an Athenian eupatrid, a philosopher of the Athenian genus, who lived in the 2nd century AD during the reign of Hadrian. He became a Christian by St. Dionysius and St. Jerome and wrote an apology to Hadrian on behalf of persecuted Christians. He was subsequently expelled and because Hadrian was absent he went to Rome where he apologized. He was then taken to Athens where he was martyred, after being hanged in the Athenian marketplace on September 13, 120 AD. Jerome wrote a eulogy for the Saint and called him an Isapostle.
