The icon of the Virgin Mary, the “Axion esti”, is one of the famous icons of Mount Athos. It is located in the temple of Protatos in Karyes on Mount Athos, considered to be the “common protector” icon of all Mount Athos monasteries, bearing the seals of all 20 monasteries on its frame.
On 11 June 980 AD (according to others 982 AD) the old man was absent from the cell, as he had gone to a vigil in Karyes, leaving only his subordinate. The submissive at night was normally doing his rule.
He hears a knock on the door, opens it and sees a passerby asking him to take him in, which he does. The monk continues his canon until he reaches the th canto “On the Holy Day of Cherubim…”.
Then the guest interrupts him and says: “No, first you will say: “Aksion estin as truly…” as a complement to the greatness of the Virgin Mary under Cosmas Mayumas. The monk excitedly asks the young man to write the hymn for him so that he can also sing it.
But because no ink and paper was found in the cell, the mysterious foreign monk engraved the hymn with his finger on a stone slab and adding that this is how the hymn should be sung from now on by all Orthodox, he disappeared.
The Athonites sent the plaque to the King and to Patriarch Nicholas Chrysoberg, who approved the introduction of this angelic hymn into the liturgical life of the Church.
The icon, in front of which the angelic hymn was sung for the first time, was transferred to Protaton, where it was established that the annual feast would be held in memory of the miracle and in honour of the Virgin Mary.
