Saint Stephen was one of the most distinguished among the seven deacons chosen by the early Christians to oversee the common banks of the brethren so that no mistakes would be made, and ordained by the Holy Apostles. Although the responsibility of being a steward for so many brethren was tiring, Stephen nevertheless found time and strength to preach the Gospel of Christ. And as the Bible says: “Stephen, full of faith and power, raised up monsters and great signs among the people.” That is, Stephen, who was full of faith and gifted with eloquence, performed great miracles among the people, which caused astonishment and proved the truth of the Christian preaching.

Stephen had dedicated his life to the preaching of the gospel word and to charitable activity. For his service and virtues he was honoured with the gift of miraculous works. With this gift he healed the sick and proved the power of Christ. With his profound theological training he easily overturned the Jews’ slanders of Christ’s work, arousing their anger and envy.

But the Jews, being prejudiced, unleashed slanderers among the people, who spread the word that they had heard Stephen blaspheme against Moses and God. So on the occasion of these slanders, which they themselves had instigated, they seized Stephen with hatred and brought him before the Court, ostensibly to apologize. Stephen’s apology was a model of boldness and courage. Without any fear, he unleashed thunderous words against the Jews. And from being a suspect, he rose up as a stormy auditor and accuser. Then the Jews, unbridled by hatred, dragged him out of the city, where they put him to death by stoning. It was there that Stephen’s great forgiveness of his enemies was shown in his phrase, “Lord, do not set up this sin for them.” Lord, do not impute this sin to them.
