Within the chorus of Old Testament prophets, the prophet Elijah holds a special place. In the New Testament the name of the prophet Elijah is mentioned many times by Jesus Christ himself. Zechariah, the father of the Baptist, said that John would come “in the spirit and power of the sun” (Luke, chap. a, v. 17), that is, he would have the traits and zeal of the prophet Elijah; he would be the prophet Elijah himself, as the people expected him to come again. Jesus Christ, when he bore witness to the forerunner John and praised him, said that he was Elijah, “If you will admit it, this is the Elijah who is to come.”
The most important thing is that the disciples on the mountain, at the divine Transfiguration, saw the two prophets, Moses and Elijah, conversing with Jesus Christ. All this reveals the special place of the prophet Elijah among the Prophets and within the consciousness of the people. Even in the person of Jesus Christ, hearing his teaching and seeing his miracles, they saw the prophet Elijah, who had come again. Jesus Christ asked- “What do men call me?” And the disciples said: “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah….”.
The prophet Elijah lived in the 9th century BC and was the son of Shobak and came from Thebes (hence his name Thesbite), today’s El Istib, in the region of Gilead and belonged to the tribe of Aaron. When he was born, his father saw a divine vision: two white-robed men named him Elijah, sparred him with fire and gave him flame to eat. Then his father went to Jerusalem and after describing the vision to the priests, they told him, interpreting the vision, that his son would become a prophet and judge Israel with a double-edged sword and fire.
The Prophet Elijah exercised his prophetic gift for 25 years during the reign of King Ahab, who reigned from 873 to 854 BC. Ahab and even his wife Jezebel were wicked men and against them was the war of the prophet Elijah. Jezebel, who was not an Israelite and was becoming a cause for the faith to be distorted by pagan customs, she therefore pursued the prophet Elijah very much, so he was constantly forced to flee and hide. Jezebel chased after the prophet Elijah as Herodias chased after John the Baptist.
The first great sign, given by the prophet Elijah, was that he prayed and it didn’t rain for three and a half years. During this time the prophet hid in a cave in a stream across the Jordan. There was some water there and a crow brought him food every morning. When the water ran dry, the Prophet left and went to Sarepta in Sidon; all this by God’s command. There he was lodged with a widowed woman, who had little flour and little oil, and yet they ate all the time and did not lack. The widowed woman had a child and happened to fall ill and die. Then the prophet prayed and raised the child.
The second great sign that the Prophet Elijah showed was when he prayed and fire came from heaven. At the command of King Ahab, four hundred idolatrous false priests were gathered together, protected by Jezebel. Then the prophet Elijah challenged them to a contest. He told him, and they laid on the altar the wood and the carcass for a sacrifice, and began to run about and call all day long for the false god Baal to cast fire; “and there was neither voice nor hearing.” Then the Prophet said to them- “Stand aside! Now I will make my sacrifice.” He made an altar of his own, set it up and thoroughly sprinkled the wood with water three times, and then prayed. Then fire fell from heaven and overturned and burned the whole altar.
After this point, the people caught the four hundred false priests and the prophet Elijah punished them severely. Jezebel, furious, pursued the Prophet and he fled high up to Horeb, where five hundred years ago Moses heard the voice of God and saw the bush on fire and not burning. There the prophet Elijah was hiding in a cave and God taught him a great lesson. He said to him, “Go up to the top, and you will see God. A strong wind will blow; there will be an earthquake; you will see fire and a light and cool breeze will blow. God will be neither in the storm nor in the earthquake nor in the fire, but in the light breeze.”
Other miraculous signs of Elijah the porter were that he crossed the Jordan River with his miller and finally that instead of dying he was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire.
Note that the prophet Elijah, eight or ten years after his ascension, sent letters (perhaps through an angel) to King Joram, predicting his death for turning away from the worship of the true God: “And there came unto him in a letter by Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the Lord God David thy father, Because thou hast not been watched in the house of Jehoshaphat thy father, and in the house of Isa king Judah” (Lamentations 2, ch. 21, verse 12).
