The prophet Elijah is a great prophet who lived about 800 years before the coming of Christ. In the New Testament, the name of the prophet Elijah is mentioned many times by Jesus Christ himself. Most significantly, the disciples on the mountain at the divine Transfiguration saw the two prophets, Moses and Elijah, conversing with Jesus Christ. All this reveals the special place of the prophet Elijah among the Prophets and within the consciousness of the people. Prophet Elijah exercised his prophetic gift for 25 years in the reign of King Ahab.
The first great sign, given by the prophet Elijah, was that he prayed and it didn’t rain for three and a half years. During this time the prophet hid in a cave in a stream across the Jordan. There was some water there and a crow brought him food every morning. When the water ran dry, the Prophet left and went to Sarepta in Sidon; all this by God’s command. There he was lodged with a widowed woman, who had little flour and little oil, and yet they ate all the time and did not lack. The widowed woman had a child and happened to fall ill and die. Then the prophet prayed and raised the child.
The second great sign that the Prophet Elijah showed was when he prayed and fire came from heaven. At the command of King Ahab, four hundred idolatrous false priests were gathered together, protected by Jezebel. Then the prophet Elijah challenged them to a contest. He told him, and they laid on the altar the wood and the carcass for a sacrifice, and began to run about and call all day long for the false god Baal to cast fire; “and there was neither voice nor hearing.” Then the Prophet said to them- “Stand aside! Now I will make my sacrifice.” He made an altar of his own, set it up and thoroughly sprinkled the wood with water three times, and then prayed. Then fire fell from heaven and overturned and burned the whole altar.
After this point, the people caught the four hundred false priests and the prophet Elijah punished them severely. Jezebel, furious, pursued the Prophet and he fled high up to Horeb, where five hundred years ago Moses heard the voice of God and saw the bush on fire and not burning. There the prophet Elijah was hiding in a cave and God taught him a great lesson. He said to him, “Go up to the top, and you will see God. A strong wind will blow; there will be an earthquake; you will see fire and a light and cool breeze will blow. God will be neither in the storm nor in the earthquake nor in the fire, but in the light breeze.”
Other miraculous signs of Elijah the porter were that he crossed the Jordan River with his miller and finally that instead of dying he was taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire.
