Saint Augustine (also known as Aurelius) was born in Tagasta in Numidia, Africa, in the year 354 AD to a fervent Christian mother, Monica (commemorated on 4 May) and a pagan father, Patricio. He completed his encyclical studies in his homeland and then his father sent him to Madaura and for higher studies in Carthage.
As a young student he led a dissolute life, from which he also had a child out of wedlock. In Africa, he became a follower of Manichaeism, but when he later arrived in Milan, his mother’s fervent overnight prayers, his own careful study of the Holy Scriptures and the fervent preaching of Bishop Ambrose of Midian, brought Augustine to Christianity, he asked to be catechized and was baptized a Christian with his 15-year-old son, Adeodates.
He later returned to Africa where he taught and fervently spread Christianity and after his mother’s death he went to Rome.
When in 391 AD he visited some friends in Hippon (on the coast of Numidia), the bishop of the city, appreciating his rich gifts, his passion for teaching and his profound theological knowledge, ordained him an elder and later an auxiliary bishop. After Valerius’ death, he succeeded him on the throne of the Diocese of Hippo in 396 AD.
He governed his flock with wisdom and discernment for 34 long years and died peacefully at the age of 76, on 28 August 430 AD.
A sequence of the Saint was compiled by the Athonite Iakovos, published in Smyrna in 1861 AD and by the Archimandrite Ioannis Danilidis, published in Athens in 1914 AD.
